Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about first aid training on the Gold Coast
How long is a first aid certificate valid in Australia?
Your HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) certificate is recommended for renewal every 3 years. The CPR component (HLTAID009) should be renewed annually. Many workplaces and regulatory bodies require both to remain current.
Do I need to renew my CPR every year?
Yes. The Australian Resuscitation Council and most industry bodies recommend annual CPR renewal. Skills degrade significantly after 12 months without practice.
What is the difference between HLTAID009 and HLTAID011?
HLTAID009 is CPR only - it covers cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED use. HLTAID011 is a comprehensive first aid course that includes CPR plus wound management, burns, fractures, medical emergencies, and more. HLTAID011 includes HLTAID009, so you get both qualifications.
What is HLTAID012 and who needs it?
HLTAID012 (Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting) is the required first aid qualification for childcare workers, educators, and anyone working in education and care settings. It includes everything in HLTAID011 and HLTAID009, plus additional content specific to managing emergencies involving infants and children.
Is a first aid certificate valid across Australia?
Yes. All HLTAID units are nationally recognised qualifications. Your Statement of Attainment is valid in every state and territory in Australia.
What does a first aid course involve?
Our first aid courses include pre-course online theory work (videos and knowledge questions) followed by a face-to-face practical session. During the practical component, you'll practise CPR, AED use, bandaging, and responding to various emergency scenarios. Assessment includes both practical demonstrations and knowledge questions.
How long does a first aid course take?
HLTAID009 (CPR): Approx. 2-3 hours total. HLTAID011 (First Aid): Approx. 6-8 hours total. HLTAID012 (Childcare First Aid): Approx. 7-9 hours total. All courses include pre-course online work plus face-to-face training time.
How much does a first aid course cost on the Gold Coast?
SKLD Training course prices: CPR (HLTAID009) - $52, Basic Life Support (HLTAID010) - $102, First Aid (HLTAID011) - $102, Childcare First Aid (HLTAID012) - $112, Asthma & Anaphylaxis + CPR - $112. Group pricing available for onsite bookings of 5+ people.
Can you do first aid training at our workplace?
Yes. We deliver onsite first aid training across the Gold Coast and Brisbane for groups of 5 or more. We bring all equipment - manikins, AED trainers, bandages, and assessment materials. Your team trains together in their own environment.
What is the minimum group size for onsite training?
We require a minimum of 5 participants for onsite delivery. There's no maximum - we can train teams of any size by running multiple sessions.
Do you offer individual bookings?
Yes. We offer both corporate group bookings (5+ people) and private individual bookings. Private bookings may have additional fees. Use our booking form to enquire.
How many first aiders does my workplace need?
This depends on your workplace risk level, number of workers, and location. The QLD WHS Code of Practice for First Aid provides guidance. Generally: low-risk workplaces need 1 first aider per 25 workers, high-risk workplaces need 1 per 10 workers.
What first aid do I need to work in childcare?
Childcare workers need HLTAID012 (Provide First Aid in Education & Care Setting), current CPR renewed annually, and current asthma and anaphylaxis management training. These are requirements under the Education and Care Services National Regulations.
Do casual workers need first aid training?
If casual workers may be required to provide first aid or are nominated as first aiders, they should hold current qualifications. The WHS duty of care applies regardless of employment type.
What happens if your first aid certificate expires at work?
An expired certificate means you may not meet your workplace's WHS compliance requirements. Your employer could face penalties for not maintaining adequate first aid arrangements. We recommend booking renewal before expiry.
What is the DRSABCD action plan?
DRSABCD stands for: Danger (check for dangers), Response (check for a response), Send for help (call 000), Airway (open the airway), Breathing (check for breathing), CPR (start CPR if not breathing), Defibrillation (apply AED). This is the standard emergency response protocol taught in all Australian first aid courses.
Do I need a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?
Yes. A USI is required for all nationally recognised training in Australia. It's free to create and takes about 2 minutes. If you don't have one, we can help you get set up before your course.
What are the current CPR guidelines in Australia?
The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines recommend: 30 compressions to 2 breaths ratio for adults, compress at least 1/3 of chest depth, at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. Guidelines are updated regularly - another reason annual CPR renewal matters.
Is there online-only first aid training?
No. All accredited first aid courses in Australia require a face-to-face practical assessment component. You cannot get a valid first aid certificate purely online. Our courses include online pre-course theory followed by mandatory face-to-face practical training and assessment.
